G99 Application

G99 is the engineering recommendation governing the connection of generation equipment to distribution networks, requiring DNO approval for systems over 16A per phase.

What is G99?

G99 (formerly G59) is the Engineering Recommendation published by the Energy Networks Association (ENA) that governs how generation equipment connects to UK distribution networks.

When G99 Applies

G99 application is required for:

  • Generation systems over 16A per phase (approximately 3.68kW single phase)
  • All three-phase generation connections
  • Systems with export capability above thresholds
  • Battery storage systems with grid export

Smaller systems fall under G98 (simplified notification).

G99 Application Process

  1. Pre-application - Initial enquiry to DNO
  2. Formal application - Submit technical details
  3. DNO assessment - Network impact study
  4. Offer - Connection terms and costs
  5. Acceptance - Agree to conditions
  6. Installation - Complete work
  7. Commissioning - Final notification to DNO

G99 Timelines

StageTypical Duration
Pre-application response10 working days
Assessment (simple)25 working days
Assessment (complex)45+ working days
Offer validity90 days

Common G99 Challenges

  • Network capacity constraints requiring upgrades
  • Export limitations imposed by DNO
  • Extended timelines for complex applications
  • Cost uncertainty for reinforcement works
