Metering & Data

SMETS2

Second-generation smart meters that communicate via the national Data Communications Company (DCC) infrastructure, enabling supplier switching without losing smart functionality.

What is SMETS2?

SMETS2 (Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specifications 2) defines the technical standards for second-generation smart meters in Great Britain. Unlike first-generation SMETS1 meters, SMETS2 meters communicate through the centralised Data Communications Company (DCC) network.

This national infrastructure ensures meters remain "smart" when customers switch energy suppliers.

Key Features of SMETS2

SMETS2 meters offer significant improvements over earlier versions:

  • Interoperability - Work with all energy suppliers through the DCC network
  • Remote Updates - Firmware can be updated remotely
  • In-Home Display - Customers can monitor real-time energy usage
  • Half-Hourly Data - Enable time-of-use tariffs and demand response
  • Prepayment Mode - Can switch between credit and prepay remotely

SMETS2 and Installation Work

When installing renewable energy systems or performing metering work, SMETS2 considerations include:

  • Export Metering - SMETS2 meters can record solar export for SEG payments
  • Safe Isolation - SIP-accredited operatives must follow specific procedures
  • Data Flows - Integration with market messaging systems
  • Firmware Compatibility - Ensuring meters support required functionality

Our SIP and installation services are fully compatible with SMETS2 requirements and DCC protocols.
