CoMCoP

Consolidated Metering Code of Practice - the industry code that sets competency standards for personnel installing, maintaining, and removing gas and electricity meters.

What is CoMCoP?

CoMCoP (Consolidated Metering Code of Practice) is the industry code that defines the competency requirements for anyone working on gas and electricity metering equipment in Great Britain. It ensures that metering work is carried out safely and to consistent standards.

CoMCoP is administered under the Retail Energy Code (REC) framework and covers both electricity and gas metering activities. It consolidates four previous Codes of Practice into one combined document.

CoMCoP Competency Framework

The code establishes competency levels for different metering activities:

Electricity Metering

  • EMO (Electricity Metering Operative) - Qualified to work on electricity meters
  • Safe Isolation - Additional competency for de-energising supplies
  • Commissioning - Skills for meter installation and testing

Gas Metering

  • Gas Meter Installation - Competency for fitting and exchanging meters
  • Gas Safety - Understanding of gas safety regulations
  • Data Management - Skills for RGMA data flows

CoMCoP Compliance Requirements

Organisations must demonstrate:

  1. Competent Personnel - Engineers with appropriate qualifications
  2. Training Records - Evidence of initial and refresher training
  3. Quality Management - Procedures to maintain standards
  4. Audit Readiness - Documentation for regulatory inspections
  5. Continuous Development - Keeping skills current with regulation changes
